Grilled Figs&Tofu Bites. Sweet, caramelized, oozing figs over soft tofu and crispy bread. What can one want more from a Summer day? The perfect bite, done in a quick min!

Oh, yes!

Grilled figs, oozing from my grill pan and onto the as equaly nice grilled tofu and bread. This is pretty much the essence of todays recipe so I won’t go much in some storytelling and whatnot, rather give you pics and recipe and let you hurry and make it yourself!

Along with so many grapes we were blessed with at our Summer house in Istria, there are few fig trees too. So the moment they started to get ripe we were in a hurry to pick some because along with plethora of grapes and figs, along came a whole nation of bees and wasps with whome I don’t intend to fight for teritory. I don’t want to be in their way at all. Not because I fear them much but because bees are precious. So precious. And I wish every flower, every fruit they can get their little hands and wings on, to be theirs.

With tht said, my husband brought a plate with few figs and since they get soft quickly and since it was nearly golden hour when shades are soft and light is pouring gold on us, people sometimes get hungry too. It was a lazy day, I must admit, and there was nothing much in the kitchen.

I picked what I already had: big, beautiful grilling pan I found unpacked in my mother in law’s pantry (bless her!), two handfuls of figs, little package of tofu that was waiting to get a proper makeover… or better say, tasteover and few pieces of stale bread.

And that, my dear everyone, is all that is to it.

OK, there is a little bit of olive oil, some salt and tomatoes.

And don’t forget a nice, thin glass of rich wine afterwards!

Grilled Fig & Tofu Bites
serves 4

6 – 8 smaller figs, cut in 3, lenghtwise
250 g /ca. 8 oz firm Tofu, sliced
stale bread, sourdough would be great
salt, pepper
some olive oil
2 – 3 cloves garlic, minced finely
fresh tomatoes, sliced

Heat the grilling pan nicely, without any oil. You can pour a drop or two but you can skip it. I didn’t, especially bread 😉 So grill figs, bread and tofu to get that nice, brown stripes. Tofu will be done first so watch it doesn’t fall apart. Same goes for figs too. They might stick a bit but that’s fine. Stack the bites: some bread, garlic, tofu, figs, some garlic again and then some olive oil and there you go! Oh, salt and pepper. You can add them whenever you want and to your taste.
